Martin recently took the opportunity to meet with local schoolboy William Chico, 13, about his efforts to raise awareness for a project called ‘Liter of Light’.
‘Liter of Light’ focuses on bringing sustainable lighting to many homes across the developing world. By inserting an old drinks bottle filled with a simple mixture of bleach and water into the roofs of huts, it can provide the same amount of energy as a 55 watt electric bulb. William has been campaigning to raise the profile of this issue for some time, even attending environmental conferences in London.
Martin commented “It is fantastic to see William acting far beyond his years by taking an interest in the issues that affect so many people in developing countries. Although it may sound like a simple idea, it is sustainable and has already been installed in over 350,000 homes.
“We in this country cannot imagine having to perform day-to-day household tasks in the dark. However, this is all too common in countries like Nigeria or Peru. By installing this simple solution, families who cannot afford electricity can now have a better quality of life.
“William has shown fantastic initiative in this project and I sincerely hope he can keep up the good work and continue to raise awareness.”
