Samaritans Drop-in

Martin attended a drop-in event this week to support the Samaritans' campaign: United with the Frontline.

This new initiative calls for mandatory suicide prevention and trauma training for firefighters, following a similar successful agreement for new police officers earlier this year.

Following the drop-in event, Martin said, "Three in four people who die by suicide are not in touch with mental health services in the year before their death, but they are often in contact with frontline workers. With suicide-related callouts to Fire and Rescue services having tripled in the last decade, it is vital that our firefighters receive the necessary training to notice and support individuals at crisis point.

"As such, I was glad to meet with the Samaritans team and frontline firefighters to review local data and discuss how we can work together to address this tragic issue."
