Following the recent announcement that Phillips 66 will acquire the Lindsey Oil Refinery site, Martin decided to once again apply for a Parliamentary debate to highlight the concerns of the oil refining sector.
Before Christmas, Martin applied for and led a debate on the Future of the Oil Refining Sector in the UK, which took place in Westminster Hall, Parliament’s secondary debating chamber. This time, Martin was able to secure an Adjournment debate, which takes place in the main House of Commons chamber. This debate was an opportunity to highlight national energy security concerns, with the UK becoming increasingly dependent on imports from abroad, thereby placing our energy security at the whims of foreign governments.
During the debate, Martin and other members argued that, while the government aims for Net Zero, the transition should not come at the cost of "deindustrialization." Refineries provide essential fuel for critical industries like defence and transport that cannot yet be fully replaced by renewables.
