Following his attendance at Bowel Cancer UK’s recent Parliamentary Reception, Martin is calling for urgent action to improve bowel cancer survival rates.
Bowel cancer is the second biggest cancer killer. Every 12 minutes someone is diagnosed and, shockingly, around 1 in 4 will be diagnosed as an emergency, when sudden complications mean they end up in A&E. For these patients, the disease is typically more advanced and harder to treat.
Martin said: "Bowel cancer impacts thousands of lives across the country every year, including many in our area. This campaign is a vital reminder that we must do more to ensure that everyone has access to early diagnosis. We must also raise awareness. We must educate the public on the "red flag" symptoms, such as blood in poo, a persistent change in bowel habit, or unexplained weight loss. We must also remove barriers, such as taboos which prevent people from seeking help or completing their screening kits."
